In Ethiopia’s pastoral regions, conflicts over resources and politically driven tensions often disrupt lives and communities. Global Women Empowerment Development, Ethiopia (GWEDE) is working to change this narrative by promoting peace and reconciliation through community-driven initiatives.
Why Peace Building Matters
Conflicts over water, grazing land, and other resources are common in Ethiopia’s pastoral communities. These disputes not only threaten livelihoods but also hinder social and economic development. At GWEDE, we believe that peace is the foundation for progress.
Our Approach to Peace Building
GWEDE’s peace-building efforts are centered on empowering local communities to resolve conflicts and foster coexistence. Through training, dialogue, and collaboration, we engage women, youth, religious leaders, and other stakeholders in peace-building processes.
One of our flagship initiatives is the Peaceful Understanding and Reconciliation for Pastoralists Livelihood Enhancement (PURPLE Phase II) project. This program brings together women, girls, and youth from the Borana and Dawa zones to advocate for peaceful coexistence. By addressing underlying tensions and promoting dialogue, PURPLE has become a model for community-driven peace-building.
The Impact We’ve Made
Our peace-building programs have led to reduced violence and stronger collaboration between communities in the Borana and Dawa zones. Women and youth are now playing a leading role in fostering peace, proving that sustainable solutions come from within the community.
