Education and economic empowerment are key to breaking the cycle of poverty in Ethiopia’s pastoral communities. Global Women Empowerment Development, Ethiopia (GWEDE) is leading the charge with programs that provide women and girls with the tools they need to succeed.
The Importance of Education
In many pastoral communities, girls face significant barriers to education, including early marriage, gender-based violence, and cultural norms. GWEDE is addressing these challenges through community campaigns, vocational training, and efforts to reduce early marriage rates.
Our goal is to increase girls’ enrollment and retention in schools and to create opportunities for lifelong learning. By 2030, we aim to reduce early marriage rates in targeted areas by 30%.
Promoting Livelihood Opportunities
Economic independence is another key aspect of empowerment. GWEDE supports women farmers through climate-smart agricultural practices, such as organic farming and sustainable crop cultivation. Our flagship organic farm in Moyale provides food security while serving as a training center for sustainable farming techniques.
In addition to farming, GWEDE has established income-generating groups (IGAs) that support over 1,000 women in small businesses like poultry farming and agribusiness. To ease the burden of daily tasks, we’ve also provided 50 donkeys to assist women and girls in transporting water and firewood.
The Ripple Effect of Empowerment
When women are empowered, entire communities benefit. Through our education and livelihood programs, GWEDE is creating a future where women and girls can lead their communities toward progress and prosperity.
