Peacebuilding, Conflict Prevention & Social Cohesion

GWEDE works with pastoralist women, girls, youth, and communities in conflict-affected and cross-border areas to promote peaceful coexistence, prevent conflict, strengthen social cohesion, and advance community-led peacebuilding.
Through the Peaceful Understanding and Reconciliation for Pastoralist Livelihood Enhancement initiatives (PURPLE II and PURPLE III) supported by Bread for the World (BfD) and Diakonie and the Life & Peace Institute (LPI) Small Grant Programme we work across the Moyale cross-border area and with inter-boundary communities in the Somali and Oromia regions.

What we do

Strengthen Inter-Boundary Peace Committees (IBPCs) through regular meetings, joint dialogue, coordination, and collaborative conflict-prevention initiatives across administrative boundaries.

Convene Community Conversation Groups (CCGs) quarterly, safe, and inclusive spaces for dialogue, reconciliation, and mutual understanding.

Build community-based early warning and early response capacity to identify, report, and act on emerging conflict risks before they escalate.

Introduce standardized early-warning reporting tools in Afaan Oromo and Somali to make conflict-risk reporting timely and accessible.

Facilitate multi-stakeholder dialogue among communities, authorities, traditional leaders, women, and youth to address the sources of tension.
