The Efforts Are Working

1. Peace Building

Our peace-building efforts have already led to reduced violence and increased cooperation between communities in the Borana and Dawa zones. A notable example of this is our Peaceful Understanding and Reconciliation for Pastoralists Livelihood Enhancement (PURPLE Phase II) project, which brings together women, girls, and youth to advocate for and champion peaceful coexistence in the Moyale area, spanning both Oromia and Somali regions. This initiative has been highly appreciated by all stakeholders for its impactful results, and it continues to serve as a model for community-driven peace-building.

2. WASH Boreholes Drilled

We are proud of our success in delivering clean water to over 2,000 people in Borana and Dawa Zones reducing waterborne disease incidents by 30% in the past year. Additionally, our pilot MHM initiative will benefit over 100 girls/women.

3. Food and Livelihood

One of our flagship initiatives is a model organic farm in Moyale, which serves a dual purpose: it provides a steady food source for vulnerable households while also acting as a center for learning and training in sustainable farming techniques. Through this project, local women gain valuable skills and resources to manage eco-friendly agribusinesses, promoting both food availability and economic independence.

In addition to the farm, GWEDE has established income-generating groups (IGAs) that currently support over 1,000 women across various small businesses. These businesses range from poultry farming (such as chicken rearing for eggs) to other entrepreneurial ventures that strengthen local economies and foster self-reliance.

To further alleviate the daily burdens faced by women and girls, we have also provided over 50 donkeys to assist in the transportation of water and firewood—tasks that are traditionally carried out manually. This support not only reduces physical strain but also enhances mobility, allowing women and girls to focus on education, business, and community activities.

GWEDE is emerging as an influential force for transformative change, driven by a deep commitment to amplifying the voices of marginalized communities, particularly women/girls and youth.
